The Elmwood Educational Experience
Our staff team plan the daily learning experiences for all our children following ‘Pre Birth to Three’ for our younger children and the ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ for our older children incorporating ‘The Child at the Centre 2’ guidelines. This allows us to ensure that the children's experiences are fun, challenging and age appropriate and cover all key areas of the curriculum creating a smooth transition in to Primary 1.
We encourage the children to express their ideas and opinions which are always valued, this assists the children in building a sense of self-worth, self-confidence and a sense of belonging. Children have the opportunity to work together in a variety of ways, from working with staff helping plan their learning experiences, or on our Eco Committee or as food critic in a sample group when Chef Debbie is trying new menu ideas to taking on leadership roles such as lunch monitor or playground patroller.
Partnership with East Renfrewshire Council
Working in Partnership with East Renfrewshire Council allows parents to access the Government Funding for 3 & 4 year olds, for the session 2016/17 up to maximum £2,100 towards their nursery costs. Eligible children receive their funding in 6 instalments throughout the year.
In addition, our Partnership Status allows us to access educational support from ERC in the form of weekly visits by our Partnership Teacher who works closely with our pre-school team. We also receive support to ensure that our self-evaluation and review processes are appropriate and effective.
Fresh air and outdoor fun is a vital ingredient for a child’s health and well being. At Elmwood our children enjoy daily outdoor play in our fully secured age appropriate gardens. Everyday’s an adventure with a huge variety of activities on offer; from building a den or searching for bugs to tending to the garden and caring for our seedlings, not to mention burning off steam running, climbing and cycling. When the weather is really good we take the whole playroom outside.
Our visiting teachers are a valuable asset to our programme of activities, offering diversity and enhancing the children’s learning experience. La Jolie Ronde, our French Teacher, introduces our 3 & 4 year olds to a second language through songs and games. Gary, our Sport’s coach is a big hit with his repertoire of sports games, the children work on their hand-eye co-ordination and ball skills with Enjoy a Ball and they experiment with music & movement with Jo Jingles. The children get first hand experience of the animal world with Zoo Lab.
